This will be it for the Raptors when they visit New Jersey Friday night. In game 5, the Raptors led by as many as 17 points in the second half but they almost blew it. There is no way they can step up and tie the series, or even cover the spread. Now that the Raptors’ two point guards are hurt, they will all have to rely on Chris Bosh, but it’s so tough for Bosh to carry this team down the stretch. The Nets defense has done a great job of hassling Toronto’s players and Bosh just hasn’t been able to get it going. He has scored only a combined 35 points in the last three games.

New Jersey’s veteran leadership has come to the forefront in this series against the inexperienced Raptors. Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, and Richard Jefferson have all played their roles perfectly and have frustrated Toronto in the process. Nets are just to dominate agianst the Raptors at home. We wouldn’t be shocked if the Nets win by 20.

Heading now to the diamond, we’ll take the Chicago Cubs against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. Anthony Reyes, the Cardinals’ starter, is off to a poor start, with a 5.63 ERA in 3 outings. Not the kind of player we want to back. He is 0-3 lifetime with a 5.14 ERA in two starts and a relief appearance against the Cubs. Jason Marquis, on the other hand, looked good in his last two starts, allowing just a run in 13 innings. We love that he is 2-0 with a admirable 1.20 ERA against St. Louis for his career. This is the same pitching match-up as last Saturday and the Marquis’ Cubs beat the Cardinals outright. Although this time is the home game for St. Louis, we expect their offense will struggle against formar Cardinal, Marquis, who should feel like pitching in his home field back in St. Louis.

In NBA action this week, the Toronto Raptors head south to LaLa land to take on the Lakers. The Raptors embarked on an ambitious rebuilding project over the summer, and while their new Phoenix-Suns-North run-and-gun strategy should pay off in the long run, they’re still trying to make the pieces fit. They enter this game with a 2-5 record, losing all three of their road games by double-digits. They are in the middle of a 5 game Western Conference swing, playing three games in four nights starting tonight. What we’ve got here is a young, developing team in a bad scheduling spot against a well-rested team at home. The Lakers haven’t played since Sunday, and don’t play again until this coming Sunday – what that means is that they’ll be rested and prepared, but without the risk of looking ahead to their upcoming—and perhaps more important—games. Toronto’s going to get the full attention of Kobe and Co., and that means trouble for Raptors fans. LA has gone 4-1 at home so far this season, and wins early in the year proved that this is not just Kobe’s show – the whole team can contribute. We’ve seen this Lakers team beat Phoenix, Seattle, Minnesota, and Memphis by a combined 31 points, and we’re confident that they’ll take care of business against a tired, young Raptors team. A friend of ours joked the other day that the Colts had a bigger chance of losing against the bye week than they do against the Bills this weekend. If you’ve been following Buffalo’s disastrous season, you’ll know that they’re in no way a threat to push this total over. They’re averaging 14.2 points in their four games on the road, and even that number doesn’t tell the whole story, because they scored a defensive TD, and put up a meaningless TD against Chicago with a minute left and trailing 40-0. Now, their best player (RB Willis MaGahee) is on the sidelines resting broken ribs, and they have to deal with Anthony Thomas – a decent back-up once upon a time, but four years past his best days – as his replacement. However, the Bills aren’t going to have much choice but to give Thomas a whole bunch of carries, because Coach Dick Jauron knows Indy ranks last in run defense, and he’ll try to take advantage. He’s certainly going to shy away from challenging Indy in the air, especially with safety Bob Sanders playing his second game back from injury this week. Sanders made a big difference last week in that big win against the Patriots, and his presence means that Colts Coach Tony Dungy will stack the line against the run, pressuring QB Losman to pass. The Bills are in a tough spot in Indy’s house this week, and there’s no escaping. However, there’s no ignoring the fact that this is prime letdown territory for the Colts after the Broncos and Patriots games. The Bills have excellent special teams, a good punter, and their defense is improved as Takeo Spikes works his way into playing shape. The Colts are going to put up points, but we’re expecting long, clock-eating drives. We’re shying away from the 12-point spread, but this total – currently 45 – is high enough that we’re looking at a comfortable Under. Play the Under.

Bowling Green is in a bit of an unusual situation this week, and that’s only because they’re coming off a loss to Temple, which doesn’t happen too often. When it does, it forces a team into an unusual zone in the betting world: linesmakers have no choice but to downgrade them in a big way, yet they also enter their next game in prime revenge position. As a result, this week’s line against Akron is set at +9, but to be honest, we think these teams could be on the same level, especially with Bowling Green’s pride on the line after last week’s embarrassment. One can make the case that the Falcons should have actually won the game against Temple. They dominated the line of scrimmage, with 15 more first downs than the Owls (27-12) and greater than 150 yards more offense (407-254), but had a few unlucky bounces, and came out on the wrong end of the scoreboard. Make no mistake – the final score last week did not accurately reflect the abilities of those two teams, just as this week’s resulting line does not reflect the abilities of these two teams, and we’re ready to capitalize. Bowling Green is still only one game out of a playoff spot in the M.A.C. East, and they’ve got a schedule that could very well finish up as a 3-0 run to end the season. The Falcons have something to play for here, which is more than the Akron Zips can say. With three conference losses already, Akron has failed in all of their pre-season goals, and we’re not sure that they’ll be able to find motivation the rest of the way. Coach J.B. Brookhart has already said that red-shirt freshman Carlton Jackson will see action, which implies to us that the team is already looking to the future. Starting P.K. Jon McClain is playing with the varsity soccer team in the M.A.C. tournament this weekend, instead of in the football game, which gives us further proof. Do these indicators suggest a team eager to cover a 9 pt spread against a team with equal talent and added motivation? You be the judge. Bowling Green leads the M.A.C. in rushing and first downs, which tells us that they’re able to hang on to the ball and eat up clock time when they are in a situation of having to preserve a lead. With a short bus ride between these two schools, we’re expecting a large Bowling Green cheering section, which will add even more emotion to the atmosphere. The Carolina Panthers are in a bit of a rare situation here, as they enter this game as 3-pt dogs. The Panthers are 18-3 (85%) in their last 21 games as an underdog, and they’re 4-0 since Steve Smith returned to the lineup. There’s no reason to think another cover won’t come through this weekend. Not only can the Bengals not stop a strong ground attack (which is a hallmark of the Panthers’ game), they also have trouble against the well-coached, bruising teams that include the Carolina Panthers. With Steve Smith back to his typically-devastating form, and with QB Jake Delhomme coming off a career-high 365 yards passing against a stingy Ravens ‘D’, the Bengals could be in trouble. We’re expecting DeShaun Foster to be able to run against the Bengals, who gave up 231 rush yards to the Patriots. Injuries and suspensions have decimated the Bengals at linebacker, and we predict this will show on Sunday. Fiinally, the Bengals have had serious issues protecting Carson Palmer, giving up 17 sacks in five games. Cincinnati is just 3-8 against the spread when laying points at home, and that number goes to 3-9 this weekend. Play the Carolina Panthers, ATS.

The late score came after officials inexplicably added time to the clock for reasons unknown. This means that Penn State will be ready to put forth the effort of the season so far this Saturday. Our bet is that they’ll stay within the number, and may win the game. Mario Manningham is not here to bail out the Wolverines this time around, and they are simply not as good a team without him. The Wolverines won’t be able to demand instant double coverage the way they did with him on the field, and their attack on Penn State’s secondary will be nowhere near as strong. This Penn State team has had road tests against Notre Dame and Ohio State, held the Buckeyes to 253 yards, and intercepted Troy Smith twice. Michigan is a step down in quality from Ohio State, and QB Anthony Morrielli should get a chance to find comfort against a weaker D. Although we’re tempted to go with the moneyline play here, we’ll take the safe cushion with the spread. Play Penn State, ATS.
